A mother is a goddess, a teacher, a superwoman

At mara mea, we've made it our mission to reflect daily on everything a mother does, what the responsibilities that come with being a mother entail. We develop products that help mothers in their everyday lives and even make them more enjoyable. With Mother's Day just around the corner, we're digging a little deeper. It's easy to forget everything mothers do... Because being a mother is so multifaceted! That's why we ask ourselves the not-so-simple question: What exactly makes a mother?

  1. A mother is a goddess

“In a child’s eyes, a mother is a goddess.” - NK Jemisin

A mother's love for her child is everything. The mother's voice is the first one a child hears, the first person to sense and perhaps even understand it. Maternal support is essential for a child's well-being. A mother's love and affection for her children grows day by day, and although the children don't always show it, they enjoy it.

  1. A mother is a teacher

"But kids don't stay with you if you do it right. It's the one job where, the better you are, the more surely you won't be needed in the long run." ― Barbara Kingsolver

A mother's most important role is to raise and teach her little ones. Because one day, the day will come when the children leave the nest and lead their own lives. Of course, this is a heartbreaking situation, but it also shows that she has done her job very well as a mother. She has shared her wisdom and life experiences with her children, and now they are prepared to move on to the big world. And yet, the children will always come home to seek advice and support from their mother.

  1. A mother is omniscient

“A mother knows what her child's gone through, even if she didn't see it herself.”
Pramoedya Ananta Toer

When a woman becomes a mother, she develops a sixth sense about her child's well-being. Even if the child says everything is fine and everyone else believes this, a mother notices when something is wrong. Because she senses her child's feelings and will always care about their tears and worries.

  1. A mother is rock solid

“Once you sign on to be a mother, that's the only shift they offer.”
Jodi Picoult

Unlike other jobs where you finish work after the shift, being a mother requires total dedication – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You're a mother every hour of the day and never lose that role. From the moment you wake up in the morning, until bedtime, and at night to comfort you from nightmares. And yet, being a mother is the best job in the world, because the reward is better than all the well-paid jobs combined.

  1. A mother is a superwoman

“If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?”
Milton Berle

Mothers can do it all, all at once. They can prepare breakfast, do the dishes, comfort the baby, and then wake up a sleepy little one all at once. Mothers can be everywhere at once and accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously – and all with just two hands!

  1. A mother is unperturbed

" Motherhood is a Sisyphean task. You finish sewing one seam shut, and another rips open."

-Jodi Picoult

Being a mother isn't always easy. It takes courage and determination. There are many days filled with arguments, tears, and slammed doors, but a mother always manages to smooth things over. In a way no one else can emulate. She is unwavering and simply strong.

We all know a wonderful, caring, and loving mother who deserves to be pampered this Mother's Day! In our online shop, you can find wonderful gifts for this incredible woman.

Here at Mara Mea we consider everyday what it means to be a mother and the needs that come with it. We produce products for the practical daily needs of mothers everywhere. But with Mother's day just a few days away, we have started to dig a little deeper. Surely saying that motherhood is merely a question of practicality would be superficial, because whether you are a mother or not, you can appreciate that it really is about so much more. So this Mother's day, Mara Mea is asking the rather thought provoking, and sometimes tear jerking question: what is a mother?

  1. A mother is a goddess

“In a child’s eyes, a mother is a goddess.” NK Jemisin

To a child, their mother's love is everything. Their mother is the first thing they hear, see and possibly understand. A mother's input to her well-being is vital, whilst maternal support is undoubtedly necessary. A mother's love and affection for her children glows from her and is wholeheartedly appreciated by her children, even if they don't necessarily always show it.

  1. A mother is a teacher

"But kids don't stay with you if you do it right. It's the one job where, the better you are, the more surely you won't be needed in the long run."
Barbara Kingsolver ,

One of the biggest jobs of any mother is to educate and teach her child about growing up and the world around them. The day will come when her little one will want to spread their wings and lead their own lives, and as heart wrenching as that is, it is also an affirming sign that she, as a mother, has done her job well. She has shared her words of wisdom and now her child is ready to enter the world on her own two feet. Nevertheless, they are still aware that they can always come back to their mother for support and advice.

  1. A mother is all knowing

“A mother knows what her child's gone through, even if she didn't see it herself.”

Pramoedya Ananta Toer

When a woman becomes a mother, she almost gets a sixth sense about her child and their well being. Even when they say are fine and everyone else believes them, she knows differently because she is their mother and she knows better than anyone the thoughts and feelings of her child and how to console their tears and sorrow.

  1. A mother is unwavering

“(24/7) once you sign on to be a mother, that's the only shift they offer.”

Jodi Picoult

Unlike any other job, this is a 24 hour, 7 days a week commitment. You are a mother all day, every day, from the moment they get up to when they go to sleep, and in between to comfort them after their nightmares. But, in spite of this, a mother does not see this as a sacrifice, because the reward of love and pride is more than enough and outweighs any well paid, part time post.

  1. A mother is a super woman

“If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?”
Milton Berle

Mothers can do everything, and more than likely need to do so all at the same time. While one part is making breakfast, the other is doing the washing, another part is rocking a crying baby, whilst the rest is trying to still get a sleepy teenager out of bed. Mothers really do know how to multitask, and even with only two hands, they have got it down to a fine art.

  1. A mother is undeterred

" Motherhood is a Sisyphean task. You finish sewing one seam shut, and another rips open."

-Jodi Picoult

Being a mother is not a task for the faint hearted. It requires grit and determination. There will be many setbacks, days full of arguments, tears and sorrow, and yet a mother can pick the pieces up and put the jigsaw back together in a way no one else can, even when her own heart is breaking. She is undeterred by anything in her way, making any mother a strong force to be reckoned with.

We know you are all wonderful, caring and kind mothers and all deserve to be spoiled this mother's day! Head over to our online shop to see what treats we have to offer.
