Sophia from Maybe You Like on being a mom, her job as a graphic designer & travel adventures
Sophia has been sharing her travel adventures on her blog Maybe You Like since 2011 and, more recently, her life as a new mom.
Sophia, 30, a graphic designer, talks to us today about the challenges of being a mother, her job and her love of travel.
You have traveled a lot - what does traveling mean to you?
Discovering new things!!! New cultures, new food, new nature... I find that exciting. And simply getting away from everyday life and being together.
What other places would you like to see?
A friend was just in Mexico – the pictures she sent looked fantastic! But I'd also love to go to Mongolia.
Traveling with children: what challenges are there and how do you overcome them?
On Clara's first flight to Australia, she was six months old. I was breastfeeding, and she was just about to roll over for the first time. So we didn't have to do much except cuddle, play a little, and breastfeed. I think things would be completely different now, and certainly more challenging. I've found everything about the trip itself quite easy so far. That's probably because I've been breastfeeding for so long, and Clara is a very good passenger in the car. But the challenges are definitely still to come!
When other mothers ask: Traveling with a child isn't it very tiring... What do you answer?
No, just do it. Every child is different, but I think if you don't overthink it and leave out the "ifs and buts," anything will work.
What is your absolute #musthave for traveling?
Phew... good question. I always take flip-flops. We almost always travel in or on a vehicle where we can sleep. So, the showers are usually at the campsite, or the bottle is emptied over our heads – I always wear flip-flops then. I've always brought a wool jumpsuit for my child. Super warm and easy to wear if it gets cold.
How is it that there is still time to travel alongside work and family?
Well, at the moment I'm working from home, or rather, I can work from anywhere. As long as the child lets me. We've simply used our parental leave to explore the world. But we've never had as much vacation as we have this year.
You work as a graphic designer – does traveling inspire you?
Oh yes! I just don't have the time to actually implement all the projects I have in mind. How do other mothers with creative jobs manage it? I'm so envious of those who manage to juggle everything.
Do you also work on the go - if so, what do you need for a good workflow?
It always takes me a while to get into a completely new project. I might spend two or three hours just surfing the internet before I get started. But then it usually works!
Self-employment and being a mother – how do they fit together?
Great for my job! I only need a computer/laptop, pen, and paper. But I'm also lucky enough to have a fantastic mother-in-law nearby. So, sometimes I load my daughter into the bike trailer in the morning, laptop included, and cycle to my grandmother's in the next village. There, I have peace and quiet to work, because the housework has been left at home, and the child is happy with her grandmother's full attention... And there's always something to eat! Win-win! But I'm very lucky in that regard.
Last but not least: Your current mara mea companion in your everyday life as a mom and why you never want to give it up again?
The pelican family diaper bag ! Beautiful, and well, I just have to take it with me at all times, otherwise I'd be in a bad mood! :)
Thank you for the great interview. We look forward to many more wonderful travel moments with you and your family.
