As beautiful as our second home Greece is - the sea right on our doorstep, the incredibly impressive nature, the scent of orange blossoms, endless olive groves - there is still a long way to go when it comes to animal welfare and people's attitudes towards animals.

Why am I sharing this post here? Whenever I'm not working on mara mea, a lot of time and heart and soul goes into our private shelter @savegreekstrays, where we offer 40+ dogs, numerous cats, 2 ponies, turkeys, and ducks a safe place, food, medical care, love, and more until we hopefully find them the forever home they deserve.

Sugar - born approx. 01/2021

Sugar is the mother of the 7 puppies (Moca, Duck, Espresso, Romeo, Cooper, Oliver and Bruno) that we found on the street and that fought for survival with her babies . Sugar is a really great dog mother (the fact that 7 puppies survived 4 weeks with her on the street speaks for itself). Sugar is incredibly loving and a fighter. She deserves so much to find a loving home so she can finally rest. Sugar is a Greek Hound and would make a great family dog. She is sensitive, very social with people and other dogs, even-tempered and calm. She is about 55cm tall at the shoulder. Rania - born approx. 06/2021

Rania is an extremely friendly, lovable dog. Her sister has already found a wonderful home in 2022. Rania is still waiting patiently. She has a very good temperament, is sociable, and very people-oriented. She is also suitable as a first dog and for families. Her shoulder height is approximately 64 cm. Linda - born approx. 11/2021

Linda is a very balanced, calm, and rather shy livestock guardian dog. She is extremely social with other dogs and people, and has a very easygoing, pleasant nature. Bilio - born approx. 01/2021

Bilio is a friendly hunting dog mix with a cheerful disposition. We found her extremely emaciated on the street, but she quickly gained weight and is now healthy and happy. She is playful and affectionate. Very social with people, but also with other dogs. She is suitable as a first dog and also for families. Her shoulder height is approximately 53 cm. Suki - born approx. 12/2021

Maxi - born approx. 10/2022

Maxi is a super-friendly little girl who absolutely adores human contact. We rescued her as a chained dog from very unpleasant circumstances, and you can tell she's forever grateful. She's a very people-oriented dog who gives and needs a lot of love. She's also suitable as a first dog and is very good for families. When fully grown, her shoulder height will be around 45 cm. Nova - born approx. 12/2021

Nova is a shy Greek Hound who, like her sister Suki, hasn't had a good life so far. She needs a loving home that will give her time to warm up and gain trust. Dalia - born approx. 12/2021

Dalia is a young and shy dog, who initially requires a lot of love and patience with strangers. Once she trusts you, however, she reveals herself to be a lively, playful dog. We found her in the summer at 45°C, kept on a very short chain without water, and she was probably kept like this for her entire first year. She was extremely scared and has since blossomed beautifully. On Instagram, you can see videos of her now playing exuberantly with other dogs and being completely herself. She needs to be welcomed into a new environment with love and patience. She would make a great second dog, as she is very sociable and looks up to other dogs. A household with dog experience would also be important for her. Her shoulder height is approximately 50cm. Sula - born approx. 03/2023

Sula was abandoned on a country road along with her two sisters, Sophia and Simi. Simi quickly found a home. These two little mice are still waiting for their perfect match! Both of them are cheerful and extremely sweet. Sula is a little more adventurous than Sophia :). Iris - born approx. 01/2022

Iris is a white Greek Shepherd. She is friendly, very people-oriented, cuddly, and learns quickly. She keeps her "pack" together :). However, livestock guardian dogs are generally not suitable as first dogs. Do you already have dog experience and have fallen in love with Iris? Twix - born approx. 03/2022

This sweet Greek Hound was born around spring 2022 and is an extremely loving and sensitive soul. Twix is ​​a bit shy at first, reserved around strangers, but in the right environment and with patience, she quickly blossoms. She is very social with other dogs (male and female). While she is very patient and undemanding, she is still a sporty, active dog, and her future home should offer her plenty of exercise. Paula - born approx. 01/2017

Paula is a small Griffon/Hunting Dog mix. She has a pleasantly calm nature and is very people-oriented. A loving home that will give her a wonderful second half of life would be great! Aris - born approx. 03/2023

Aris was handed over to us with the words, "Either you take him in or I'll kill him, because I can't use a puppy." Aris is a small hunting dog mix and a very, very fine, sensitive soul. Hunting dog mixes generally make great family dogs. Once fully grown, he will reach a back height of approximately 55 cm and weigh around 18-22 kg. Ouzo is an extra-sweet male Bracken. He has a calm, loving nature. He gets along well with other males and females and would make the perfect family dog. Elvis is a super sweet and balanced hunting dog mix. He has a calm, loving nature. He gets along well with other male and female dogs and would make the perfect family dog. Cave - born approx. 02/2022

Cave is one of two siblings. He and his sister were brought to us for fostering with the promise that they would pick him up again. Of course, his owner never showed up again. At first, Cave was very shy and reserved, but he has since warmed up, and once he feels comfortable, he is a very loving young male who loves to play, be active, and have adventures with his owner. Milo - born approx. 07/2021

Milo is a true gentleman. He is extra sweet, elegant, and even-tempered. He is the perfect passenger and delights in a little human love. He is rather shy and not a daredevil, which makes him very likeable as a young male. He was given from hunter to hunter because he doesn't hunt (breed: Ariegeois) and they couldn't use him in this way. He is an easy-going dog for beginners and also well-suited for families with children. His back height is approximately 55cm. Lio is a young hunting dog (possibly a mix) who loves all living things. From ducks to cats, other dogs, people, and children. Lio is a super social dog, perfect for families with children, and very outgoing. His shoulder height will be approximately 55-60 cm when fully grown.
